About the area

The Art Deco Capital of Australia

Potts Point is reputed to have the highest concentration of Art Deco apartment buildings in the country, most of them lining Macleay Street, once part of the land grant given to colonial secretary Alexander Macleay in 1826. The strip was listed by the National Trust in 1986 as one of the finest enclaves of Art Deco architecture in Australia.

Landmark buildings still stand along Macleay Street today, including the Macleay Regis (1939) and Gowrie Gate (1938). The Beatles stayed at 40 Macleay Street, then the Sheraton Marquee Hotel, during their 1964 Australia tour.

From Macleay Street, it's about 0.9km, a confirmed 2 minute drive through Elizabeth Bay, to Rushcutters Bay Park.

  • Macleay Regis, 12 Macleay Street
